Trove Tuesday – New Year’s Day 1880

Not only does this article from Trove tell me how my 2xGreat-Grandfather Patrick Curry was occupied on New Year’s Day in 1880 it also tells me that he was still resident in Camden at this time and helps me hone in on the date he must have moved to Cowra, NSW.

This month I am participating in the A-Z Blogging Challenge where I will endeavour to post on this blog each day. It’s my first attempt at the challenge, I hope that I have the stamina to complete it.

I will be going through the forenames in my surname study database from A-Z and,  as per the event schedule, will share some of the articles I have found on Trove relating to Currys. For problem letters like X and Q I may  resort to Google.

It’s all Patrick’s fault. One of the reasons I started my CurryAus Surname Study is because I wanted to sort out the many Currys in Australia from my branch and to see from whence all the Currys came.

Patrick Curry/Corry from Limerick in Ireland was  my first Curry ancestor to set foot in Australia. He is my 3rd great grandfather who arrived as a convict on the Hooghley in 1825. I have read the Surgeon’s Journal  from that journey and learnt of Patrick’s struggle with and treatment for scurvy. It wasn’t a pleasant journey.

On 8th June 1848 The Sydney Morning Herald published an interview by Caroline Chisholm with Patrick on the advantages of emigration. Patrick felt that he was most fortunate to be in New South Wales. It is chilling to read his words 190 years after he arrived in Australia.

So, thanks to Paddy, I am plugging away at my surname study and trying to solve the CurryAus jigsaw.

I’m going to steer clear of accidents and death today and share some happy news in this short post. Irene Mary Curry is my second cousin twice removed.
