G is for Gladys

This month I am participating in the A-Z Blogging Challenge where I will endeavour to post on this blog each day. It’s my first attempt at the challenge, I hope that I have the stamina to complete it.

I will be going through the Curry forenames in my surname study database from A-Z and,  as per the event schedule, will share some of the articles I have found on Trove relating to Currys. For problem letters like X and Q I may  resort to Google.

Gladys seems to have been a popular name for Curry Girls. Hopefully these articles from Trove will help me sort out all the Gladys.

Interesting that the only G female names in my database are Georgina, Genevieve and Georgia and I only have one each of those, no Gladys so far. I wonder how many of these were known as Glad.

After reading the sad stories of the first Gladys’, I noticed the prize winning baby was in a column titled “Many burgleries” I was afraid baby Gladys had either been burgled or had grown up to be a burgler! I have an aunt Gladys. She is now 93 and quite frail but I’m sure nobody called her Glad. The name was not passed down.

I had a great aunt called Gladys. It’s definitely a name that went out of fashion.

PS I confess, having seen the blog’s name in the A-Z Challenge list, I felt sure I was going to discover a new recipe for an Australian curry!
