A to Z Reflections

survivor-atoz 2016 v2 - sm_zpsx3dtq1n6.jpgI’m a compulsive volunteerer and joiner-inner so when I saw that quite a few of my Genimates were participating in the Blogging from A-Z Challenge I joined up at the last minute. I therefore had no time to prepare and think about what I had let myself in for so I made some newbie mistakes.

Yes, I will do it again but I won’t repeat the mistakes I made this year. I liked my theme but it also caused me problems as each of my posts required me to devote between 1-4 hours to research and writing up. As I was concerned about some unforeseen event occurring that would prevent me completing the challenge I put a lot of pressure on myself to get ahead of the challenge calendar. When I completed all the posts about ten days ahead of time there was an enormous sense of relief.

My topic was rather dull and dry and not of great appeal to a general audience. Next time I will probably choose one of my other blogs and a topic that will allow my voice and personalty to come through in the posts. I’ll also choose a topic that will allow me to share some of the thousands of photos I have taken on my travels. As I was not aiming for immediate gratification this wasn’t a huge problem. I was wanting to get my stories out into the blogisphere  where they can act as Cousin Bait for folk who in the future may be searching  for their Curry ancestors in Australia. The challenge gave me the impetus to write some of those stories.

I chose my CurryAus blog for the challenge as it is the least known of my blogs and I thought it would benefit from some extra exposure. Although it did not have a huge number of visitors I was quite pleased that the challenge brought me new genealogy contacts in Australia and further afield. I had a few visitors who were disappointed to find that it wasn’t a food blog about Curry cooking downunder.

As my interest is genealogy and family history I enjoyed finding new geneablogs to follow. This would be made easier if the organisers could create a category for genealogy/family history blogs. As it is hard to identify  a blog’s content from its title it took me until nearly the end of the challenge to find some of these blogs (and I’m sure I missed others).

I loved reading the posts from other bloggers on all manner of topics but found that I just didn’t have time to comment on as many blogs as I would have wished. It was also interesting to find that one of my genealogy contacts was also a passionate blogger, it took the challenge to let me know about her blogging activity.

As a result of the challenge, I have made some new contacts, learnt lots from the posts of Genimates , given my Surname Study some exposure, had many trips down memory lane, encouraged a fellow blogger to research her family history and seen some awful and  some awesome blogging.

Roll on April 2017…. I’ll be prepared next time.

A-Z Roundup

There is an new song buzzing in my ear today. Courtesy of Dora the Explorer I can sing We did it. But why we?

Without the encouragement of my genimates and other bloggers I would never have made it to the finish line of the A-Z Blogging Challenge. Thanks to those new and old friends who have visited CurryAus over the past month.

Like Dora I went exploring  but through the Curry forenames in my surname study database and shared some of the articles I found on Trove relating to Currys I hoped that I would have the stamina to complete the challenge and I did it.

P1050436It’s worth celebrating

I will pen my thoughts about the challenge over on my GeniAus blog later in the week of but for now I’m borrowing an idea from fellow challengees, Maria and Pauleen, and posting a compilation of my posts here in case any of my readers want a convenient way to get a dose of Curry.

Z is for Zena

This month I am participating in the A-Z Blogging Challenge where I will endeavour to post on this blog each day. It’s my first attempt at the challenge, I hope that I have the stamina to complete it.

I will be going through the Curry forenames in my surname study database from A-Z and,  as per the event schedule, will share some of the articles I have found on Trove relating to Currys. For problem letters like X and Q I may  resort to Google.

There are two Zs in my CurryAus database Zac and Zena. As Zac is far too young to be found on Trove  I’ll concentrate on Zena Curry nee Veney (1927-1985).

I am pleased to be able to finish off this A-Z challenge with some happy news.

And now I’m done and dusted with the Challenge I think I deserve a few zzzs.

It was easy to select a name for my Y post. Why? Because there is only one Y name in my database and that is Yvonne.

There are five marriages for Yvonne Curry reported in the NSW BDM Indexes but I can’t find any reports of these on Trove. I found a few references to a child Yvonne Curry around 1950 in NSW newspapers  but I won’t share these as that Yvonne may be a living person.

A sad snippet I found was the death notice of Yvonne Rose Curry (nee Rice) who died in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, NSW, aged just 25. Yvonne who had married Eric Michael Curry in 1947 left two small children.

Yvonne was the daughter of Henry Thomas and Kathleen Irene Rice.

X is for Xavier

X is not for Xavier Curry.

People have been asking me if I would be able to cover the difficult letters eg Q, X, Y and Z in this challenge. Smugly I said I had it all sorted. Well, I was wrong. I had presumed that X would be easy because there are lots of Irish Currys, many of them are Catholic and Xavier is a Catholic name.  It seems that Catholic Currys in Australia have not been calling their sons Xavier.

After finding nothing on Trove. I did a Google search and came up with one Xavier Curry (living) so I didn’t pursue him any further. I then tried an Ancestry search limited to Australia. No Xaviers.

The best I can do is a burial record for Jackson Xavier Curry who died in Finley, NSW in 1996.

When I started out on this challenge I aimed to make my posts short and sweet. I have achieved this with X.

By searching through Trove it has been possible to develop a timeline of the life of Rev. William Curry in South Australia.

As newspaper coverage in Trove is not available past 1954 I can’t find any further information on Rev William Curry. I will have to resort to other resources to read about his later life.

V is for Volney

This month I am participating in the A-Z Blogging Challenge where I will endeavour to post on this blog each day. It’s my first attempt at the challenge, I hope that I have the stamina to complete it.

Volney Curry is my choice for V as I was fascinated by the name Volney. The Meaning of Names site tells me that Volney is a German name meaning “peoples spirit”.

My CurryAus database tells me that Volney is one of six (that I have identified so far) children of George Curry and Mary Emma Geddes of Cootamundra. Perhaps Mary Emma had German ancestry or maybe the parents just liked the name Volney.

Much I can find about Volney on Trove centres around family weddings.

weddingcakelarge8

In September 1910 Master Volney Curry presented his sister May and her bridegroom, George Powell with a bread plate (1910 ‘WEDDING BELLS.’, Cootamundra Herald (NSW : 1877 – 1954), 13 September, p. 4. , viewed 17 Apr 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article144031710).  In 1911 Master Volney Curry gave his brother Reginald and new bride, Eliza McDonald, a sugar basin as a wedding gift (1911 ‘JOY BELLS.’, Cootamundra Herald (NSW : 1877 – 1954), 24 February, p. 4. , viewed 17 Apr 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139579598).

By 1921, when his brother Walter married Edith Ashton ,Volney had risen to be “Best Man”at the event (1921 ‘WEDDING.’, Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 – 1950), 15 July, p. 4. , viewed 17 Apr 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article136372138).

It was finally in 1924 that Volney walked down the aisle to greet his bride, Helen Dolina McDougall.

There are numerous mentions of the Currys of Cootamundra in the local paper, The Cootamundra Herald (NSW : 1877 – 1954). I will need at least a day to transcribe all the information in obituaries, social columns and news items in that one publication

As I approach the finish line with this challenge I am finding myself challenged by more of the letters. I have several Unknown Currys in my list, no male forenames beginning with U and just a sprinkling of female forenames ie Ulrike, Una, Unity and Ursula.

This will be a short post about Una Curry from West Wyalong.

Una’s Fifth Class Exam Results were reported in a local paper. She would have been about 11 years old in 1932.

Unfortunately I cannot find any more information about Una on Trove or several genealogy databases. I wonder what happened to her. Local resources in West Wyalong may provide an answer.

I may also follow a hunch that Una was actually Agnes Una Curry who married Charles Prideaux at North Sydney in 1941.

Thomas is one of the most represented names in my CurryAus database, my uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather were named Thomas but I’ll not write about them.

I’m going to be a little macabre and share some obituaries I’ve found for various Australian Thomas Currys. There is so much valuable genealogy information found in them.
